Detroit Devils Night 1990
For all the young 'uns who think Detroit's huge fire load is a recent phenomenon. We spent 3 nights in Detroit over the Devil's Night period in 1990 and hopscotched across the city from fire to fire, often bypassing one building fire to chase a larger column of smoke elsewhere. My notes are long gone but I seem to remember hitting 18 significant fires on Devil's Night and hearing of many more.
This is a tribute to Detroit firefighters, who at this point are possibly the busiest in the world. They are facing another kick in the ass from the State of Michigan and City who are threatening layoffs and possibly pay cuts. Meanwhile, Detroit keeps burning.
